・The summit of Mt. Chogatake is 2677m above sea level, and there is a risk of altitude sickness.
・In spring and autumn, snow accumulates on the hiking trail. (Equipment such as crampons and ice axes is required.)
・Strong winds blow on the ridgeline in bad weather, which increases the risk of falls and hypothermia.
・Please check the weather forecast carefully in advance to decide whether or not to climb the mountain.
・Please be sure to check in by 4pm. (This is a rule for climbers in Japan.)
・We recommend that you take out mountaineering insurance in case you get lost.
★Seasonal precautions
〇From opening until mid-June and from mid-October until the hut closes.
・There is snow, so you will need equipment and skills such as crampons and ice axes.
・Do not climb if the weather is bad.
Fog: Poor visibility and risk of getting lost. You will not be able to see the scenery even if you climb.
Snow/rain: Climbing for long periods of time when your body is wet increases the risk of hypothermia.
Lightning: There is a risk of being struck by lightning near the ridgeline.
Wind: In some cases, the wind can blow so hard that it is impossible to walk.
Being exposed to the wind for long periods of time increases the risk of hypothermia.
The traverse route betweenMt. Chogatake and Mt.Jonen is a route that walks along an exposed ridgeline, so special care is required.
〇Late June and early October
・These are relatively easy times to climb, but there is a possibility of snow, so you need to check.
・The temperature also varies, and sometimes it is cold and you need to be careful of hypothermia, and sometimes it is hot and you need to be careful of heat stroke. It is necessary to take measures based on the weather forecast for the day.
・In October, the days get shorter and shorter. Please arrive at the hut early.
〇July to early September
・There is no snow and it is easy to climb, but in recent years there have been many very hot days, so you need to be careful about heatstroke.
・Take at least 1.5 liters of fluid with sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions that contain salt and electrolytes.
・If you are feeling unwell, do not push yourself and consider turning back.
・Consider the risk of thunderstorms, and leave and arrive early.
〇Mid to late September
・The mountains are getting colder, and the first snow may fall.
・Bring warm clothing and be careful not to get cold even during breaks.
・In bad weather, be careful of hypothermia.
・The sun sets earlier in this period. Please leave early and arrive early.
★About the hiking trails
〇Tokusawa to Mt.Chogatake
・This route is less affected by weather.
・This is the most common and recommended route.
〇Yokoo to Mt.Chogatake
・If you are hiking from Kamikochi, this route is longer than the route from Tokusawa.
・Once you reach the ridgeline, it will take more than 30 minutes to walk to Chogatake Hut.
・This ridgeline path is highly dependent on the weather (rain, wind, snow).
・There are days when the wind is so strong that it is impossible to walk, so it is not recommended on bad weather days.
〇Mitsumata to Mt.Chogatake(via Mameuchidaira)
・This route has a larger elevation difference than other routes. (Elevation difference: about 1,350m)
・This route is less affected by weather.
・When there is snow, you will need not only equipment such as crampons and ice axes, but also the skills and experience to walk on steep snow fields.
・There is a route that goes up from Mitsumata via Maejounendake and Jonendake to Chogatake, but we do not recommend this route.
〇Mt.Chogatake to Mt. Jonen
・This route is highly dependent on the weather.
・We do not recommend this route in bad weather.
・This is a tough route with lots of ups and downs.
・As with the Mitsumata Route, during the snowy season you need not only the right equipment but also skill and experience.
